In
summer 2006, the founders have conducted visits to orphanages
in the Kathmandu valley, and spent volunteering in one of
them. All to learn more about the work required for operating
such an entity. They spoke with orphanage directors and
workers, including housemothers, accountants, and custodians.
Their research has served as the basis of our development
plan. We are seeking to fulfill our objectives in the following
manner: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
To
give orphaned and/or abandoned children the right basis
for a productive and fulfilling life |
|
| |
The
New Life Children Home strives to deliver the best possible
quality of life for their children. Optimally, New Life
Children Home will take in children at a young age, between
0-5 years, so that we may nurture children during the most
important years of development. The management of New Life
Children Home Nepal will oversee the admission of children
and design rules and regulations for New Life Children Home.
International Advisory Board will approve these policies
before implementation. In addition, the quality of our nurturing
will be reflected in various manners: food, housing, staffing,
health care and available activities & material.
Fresh vegetables and fruit will be provided on a daily basis
to provide the necessary vitamins as well as fibers. At
least 1.5 liters of clean drinking water will be available
per child per day. In addition, rice, bread, potatoes, and
the occasional treat will be provided.
New Life Children Home will
rent a local facility for its home. For the children’s
safety, the home will be situated in a suburban area of
Kathmandu, away from the business districts of town. The
home should provide enough room for the children; a proper
orphanage should have an extra room to be used as a sick
room in order to keep the other children healthy. There
should also be space for children who are transitioning
into the orphanage. A transition room allows the child to
acclimatize at his or her own pace. In addition, there should
be enough room for the children to play games outside.
Initial staffing for New Life Children Home (at 15 children)
will be consistent with what we have seen at higher quality
orphanages in Nepal. It will consist of the Manager, two
full-time live-in Didi (house mother), and a part-time laundress.
For each additional ten children above 20, New Life Children
Home will need to add a part-time Didi.
Every 2 weeks a staff member from the local health center
will visit the orphanage for a standard check up. A doctor
will visit on a bi-monthly basis. A basic medicine and first
aid kid will be provided to the full time Didi. She will
also have received extensive first aid training.
Educational and recreational outings will take place at
least 4 times a year, zoo visits, temple visits, and possibly
a short vacation trip should provide a different environment
for the children. Activities as sports (e.g. joining a soccer
team) or music and arts will be stimulated by providing
the necessary material for the children. In addition to
stimulate their general development a computer with Internet
is available under controlled circumstances. Communication
with school children in other parts of the world will be
facilitated.
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
To
educate the children up to at least SLC level (class 10)
and assure 90% graduation. Children who do not graduate
are required to have finished a technical skills training. |
|
| |
New
Life Children Home will emphasize education for all its
children. Prior to formal schooling, children will receive
regular instruction at New Life Children Home from tutors
and staff. At the age of five, our children will enroll
in kindergarten in the private schools. Schooling will be
supplemented at New Life Children Home by regular tutoring
sessions in the late afternoon, and evening study hours
for older students. The tutors will be found through the
work of the VSN volunteer organization. Preferably they
are fluent in Nepali and English. They will receive adequate
training from the VSN volunteer organization. We require
all our children who have the mental capabilities to graduate
to at least SLC Level. Other children we will provide with
technical skills training. This to ensure a successful career
later on in life. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
To teach children social responsibility. |
|
| |
All
orphans should become an active member of the local community,
by participating in local activities like community clean-up
days or cultural programs
New Life Children Home will assume a role as a valuable
community partner. We will strive to raise our children
with a sense of social responsibility, the idea of passing
on to others the benefits they received from New Life Children
Home. Our children will engage in regular service projects,
such as community clean-up days or cultural programs for
local organizations. The VSN volunteers and tutors will
stimulate this behavior and will participate itself in these
activities. In this way, the New Life Children Home will
position itself as an entity that keeps the community’s
best interests in mind.
After graduation, or at age of maturity, ensure
a safe, successful transit from the orphanage to society
When raising children in a proper manner, preparation for
adulthood is a crucial part of their education. This is
of course also one of the main subjects in the orphanage.
In addition, the staff will assist in school visits, job
search, house search and providing potential traineeships.
When an orphan is on its own, guidance will not stop immediately,
in the first period, regular check ups and meetings will
be held. The orphan is encouraged to also volunteer in its
own old orphanage. |

To
provide possibilities for adoption, but only if this proves
to be an improvement to the life of the child |
|
| |
We
have not made a final decision about adoption. We will first
investigate what legally required in Nepal to be able to
put children up for adoption. We do state however that in
our opinion adoption can only be a possibility if it improves
the life of the child involved. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
To
become a model orphanage that can serve as advisor and training
facility for other orphanages in Nepal |
|
| |
By
making exchange of staff possible with other orphanages
for a fixed period, our well-trained Didis can teach the
other staff. In addition our volunteers and tutors will
visit other orphanages to review the situation and give
advice for improvements. Our management will meet with the
management of other facilities to exchange ideas and provide
necessary advice. In addition first aid training will be
provided to the staff of the other orphanages. |
